Browsing Fiction by Genre
The fiction collection is organized by genres or categories. When searching for books in the online library catalog, the call number will help you locate the book in the library. The table below will help you decode the call number.

Example: The Hobbit has the call number: FIC (F) TOLKIEN PRELUDE
- FIC means the book is fiction. If it were nonfiction, there would be a Dewey Decimal Number instead.
- (F) is the letter code for the genre, which in this case stands for Fantasy. In the library, fiction books are grouped in sections by genre. Each book will also have the letter code with matching sticker color on its spine.
- TOLKIEN is the author’s last name. Within each genre section, books are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name. Each book will also have the author’s last name on its spine.
- PRELUDE indicates the order in a series. If a book is part of a series, then the series information follows the author’s last name.
